Give us standards, users tell storage industry

Storage management is still a major drain on IT resources, due to a lack of industry-wide standards for integrating products from different storage vendors.

But end users are willing to pay extra for products that tackle the problem head-on, according to a recent survey conducted by industry body, the Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA).

It found that almost two-thirds (62 per cent) of end users would pay more for a tested and supported multi-vendor storage solution, than for single-vendor, proprietary products. On average, they would pay around seven per cent more.

Almost one-quarter (23 per cent) of respondents, meanwhile, said they would not choose a product that did not offer interoperability.

Our take: When it comes to storage standards, there is still much work to be done if IT is to be able to meet the demands posed by massive growth in data volumes and capacity requirements. But perhaps the prospect of increased sales will galvanise storage manufacturers to do more on the interoperability front.
