Green IT is more important than ever to UK organisations, according to research from blue-chip user group The Corporate IT Forum.

Some 81 per cent of the 171 large UK-based companies polled said that green IT is a growing priority and were putting strategies in place to address it.

These include:

  • Educating users (83 per cent);
  • Server virtualisation (71 per cent);
  • Recycling hardware (71 per cent);
  • Virtual conferencing (61 per cent);
  • Managing print output (61 per cent).

Corporate, social and environmental responsibility plans are the strongest reason behind moving towards green technology, said respondents.

"Developing best practice for green IT is now a standard process within large businesses - and is backed by the board," said David Roberts, chief executive of The Corporate IT Forum. "But the survey shows that green IT is just one priority among many. The reality is that companies have a range of competing priorities - such as information security, legacy systems and data quality - and some of the large green initiatives require big investments."

However, it's worth bearing in mind that investment in green IT can also deliver rapid ROI (return on investment), from reduced energy bills and the lower total cost of ownership associated with server consolidation.

Jeremy, the good news is that this is now starting to happen, and I know of at least three major businesses who are preparing to become more vocal about the work they have done in this area. John Lewis Partnership have been very public for some time, and I think we will start to see case studies across the whole IT spectrum starting to materialise in the coming months. And NOT JUST server virtualisation.

I think what we need to see more of are some really good case studies of best practices for green IT in action. Can anyone suggest any - or perhaps any conferences where I might be able to hear from those putting green IT into practice?
